“To see my
paintings would not be far from seeing me” – Wayan
Paramartha, 2004
A trained traditional Balinese dancer from the
tender age of 8, Paramartha’s paintings explore dance
and culture. His canvases
offer insight into the emotional journey that a dancer
embarks on with each
performance.
His paintings speak of the bonds that hold
Balinese society. Performance Arts, notably dance, is
very highly regarded.
Attributes of grace and body control define the
traditional Balinese dances.
The dancer not only communicates culture through the performance but also assumes the role of an ambassador for his heritage. The donning of make-up, jewellery and costumes are symbolic of the performer assuming this larger social responsibility.
